A swirling flow combustion system with an integral laser Doppler Velocimeter is available for the investigation of fluid mechanics aspects of a swirling flow combustor. The Combustor consists of one fuel flow and two swirled airflows. The inner airflow has an interchangeable fixed swirler and the outer flow has an adjustable swirler. Both counterswirl and coswirl flows with variable with variable swirl strength can be generated. Premixed or non-premixed combustion can be investigated on this system. The airflow for the combustion system supplied by a compressor which is capable of delivering of 410 scfm at 125 psig pressure.
ATSI single component oval beam LDV system with a TSI model 9400 traverse system is available for velocity measurements within the combustor. A TSI model IFA 100 and IFA 200 triple wire hot film anemometer system is also available for 3-D velocity measurements within the combustor.
Based on the body-fitted system of coordinates, we are able to deal with compressible flows of any geometry in the two-dimensional or axisymmetric configuration by solving the Navier-Stokes equation with k - e modeling. Recent efforts paid attention to the development of a multi-grid scheme which resulted in tremendous savings of the computational time. It is entirely possible to extend our capability to the general three-dimensional flow problems.
