Unique Facilities within the Thermal Spray Laboratory of CEAS at Stony Brook

The Thermal Spray Laboratory (TSL) is a facility at the State University of New York at Stony Brook concentrating on the study of protective coatings produced by thermal spray techniques. TSL is managed by Professors H. Herman, C.C. Berndt and S. Sampath. While TSL is fundamentally an academic research laboratory, the nature of thermal spray technology requires that the research have a strong industrial orientation. Thus, the Faculty and Staff of TSL actively seek wide interactions with industrial and governmental organizations to fulfill the needs of both educating engineering professionals and of serving the local and national industrial communities. From its inception, some 20 years ago, TSL has played am important role in evaluations of materials and processes for diverse industries. These activities, carried out by TSL personnel, have been instructive to undergraduate and graduate students who carry out their research activities within the Lab.

The Thermal Spray Laboratory contains a comprehensive array of thermal spray equipment, from processing to analysis. The Lab is strongly oriented towards materials engineering, with an emphasis on feedstock materials and the characterization and properties of coatings. Associated with TSL are comprehensive powder and materials analysis and characterization facilities, as well as complete mechanical and wear testing laboratories.
