University of California, San Diego, Center for Energy and Combustion Research (CERC)

The CECR is an organized research unit at UCSD which draws faculty from a variety of engineering disciplines at UCSD to work on problems related to energy production and utilization and combustion research. A dozen faculty members from the AMES department are affiliated with this center as well as another dozen visiting faculty and researchers from around the world, all with interests in combustion research. The CECR is located in a new engineering building (1 year old) on the campus of UCSD with approximately 7000 ft 2 of laboratory space devoted primarily to combustion research. These laboratory facilities include a variety of advanced instrumentation for combustion and fluid mechanics research including laser diagnostics for fluorescence, Raman, and Rayleigh scattering; particle sizing laser-Doppler velocimetry, and PIV. Also, new gas analyzers as well as GC-mass spectroscopy are available for combustion studies. In addition to our own network of work stations at the CECR we also have easy access to the NSF supercomputer center located on the campus of UCSD. Currently, the CECR has a yearly combustion research budget in excess of $1M.
