Northwestern University

The McCormick School of Engineering and Applied Sciences is housed in the Technological Institute and the adjoining Catalysis sand Surface Science Facility and Cook Hall. This comprises over 750,000 square feet of research and classroom space. Nine departments make up the McCormick School : biomedical engineering, chemical and biochemical engineering, civil and environmental engineering, engineering science and applied mathematics, industrial engineering/management science, materials science and mechanical engineering. The Ford Motor Company Engineering Design Center, a 75,000 square foot facility dedicated to design education, is under construction.

In addition to specific project laboratories, the McCormick School houses several central research facilities including Analytical Services Laboratory, and the Materials Research Center which houses a polymer characterization lab, a surface science facility and the Electron Probe Instrumentation Center which includes state-of-the-art scanning and transmission electron microscopes. A central mechanical properties and fatigue facility and an X-ray diffraction center are also included in the Materials Research Center 's facilities. A thermal spray laboratory, a glass shop and machine shop are also part of the McCormick facilities. A new nano-scale imaging, fabrication, texting and instrumentation facility has been recently established. It houses a near-field scanning optical microscope and several atomic force microscopes specifically geared towards nano-patterning and lithography, including a nano-patterning suite of software programs. A tunable femto-second laser source and a high-powered analytical scanning transmission atomic resolution microscope, together with related accessory preparation tools, are also available.
