Solar Turbines Fellowship Opportunity
San Diego, CA
Positions are designed to provide students with challenging projects that play a key role in supporting gas turbine product design and development activities. Under the guidance of a Mentor, Interns are given a meaningful work experience, a project assignment to complete, and the opportunity to apply classroom education to real work situations. Positions are available in Combustion, Materials and Processes, Aero/ Thermal & Performance and Mechanical Design.
Specific areas of focus include:
Combustion leads the design, development, and support of combustion systems while improving performance, reducing emissions, and minimizing costs. Previous projects include testing mixing rig for different development injectors, correlating data with rig and engine data, testing and parametric studies, design test rig hardware and emissions probes for annular rig testing.
Materials and Processes provides technological solutions to materials and processes concerns in the design, development, manufacturing, and field support. Previous projects include material testing, include failure analyses and first article evaluations,
Aero/Thermal and Performance is responsible for aero/thermal design, analysis, development and production/overhaul/field support of gas turbine engine systems. The department integrates the activities of four technical disciplines – compressor aerodynamics, turbine aerodynamics, heat transfer and engine performance analysis. Critical projects focus on improving Solar's product line through new designs, product updates, advanced development and process improvement. Previous projects include unsteady computational fluid dynamics analysis of a turbine stage, experimental evaluation of an airfoil cooling configuration, engine cooling system test and analysis, development of engine cycle software, testing of development engine for cycle modeling and updating of the aerodynamic model of a production engine compressor.
Mechanical Design leads the design and development of turbine products and mechanical design methods. Previous projects include design and analysis of high-speed rotating and stationary turbine components, development of design methodologies, and manufacturing and test support.
