  • Chair - Tim Lieuwen, Georgia Institute of Technology
  • Co-Chair - Jeffrey Bons, Ohio State University
  • Past Chair - Karen Thole, Pennsylvania State University
  • Secretary - Vince McDonell, University of California, Irvine
  • Education - Bob Santoro, Pennsylvania State University

2007 Academic Advisory Board

One of the first activities of the AAB, was the preparation and participation in the Short Course entitled, "Impact of Coal Derived and Hydrogen Fuels Relevant to Gas Turbines" at the West Virginia University National Research Center for Coal and Energy (NRCCE) in August 2004. The AAB will also be proposing research activities to the IRB. Currently the AAB is offering a series of short courses to industry. Click to view the Short Course Catalog.

Dr. Tim Lieuwen
was named AAB Chair at the UTSR Peer Review Workshop IV. Dr. Lieuwen is an Associate Professor in the School of Aerospace Engineering at the Georgia Institute of Technology. He received his Ph.D. in 1999 from Georgia Tech. His areas of expertise include fundamentals and control of reacting flow phenomenon, low emissions combustion, unsteady combustion, and acoustics. For further information about the AAB, please contact Dr. Tim Lieuwen.

AAB By-Laws

The University Turbine Systems Research Program is a program funded by the U.S. Department of Energy and coordinated through the South Carolina Institute for Energy Studies. This program supports university research to develop advanced energy systems that incorporate turbines. Through the University Turbine Systems Research (UTSR) Program, faculty engage students in research related to turbine issues consistent with the primary mission of universities, which is to be institutions of learning at the highest level. The UTSR Program encompasses several activities including funding university research, providing summer fellowships to graduate students, and organizing review workshops for the presentation of university research results. While the current UTSR program is quite successful from many viewpoints, the university community wants to become more active in the program to make further improvements and to ensure that the primary mission of the universities is upheld.

Goals for the AAB

  1. Provide guidance to the UTSR Program to ensure that the primary mission of learning at the highest level is maintained relative to the turbine discipline.
  2. Provide guidance on the technical directions for the long-term research mission of the UTSR Program. This guidance includes reconciling the differences between short-term industry needs versus the mission of long term research at universities.
  3. Provide guidance on the direction for the research, educational, and outreach missions of the UTSR Program. This guidance includes providing input for the summer fellowship program, short courses for industry, research infrastructure needs, and organized seminars presented by industry to universities.
  4. Provide guidance to the UTSR Program on effective and efficient communication between the university members and industry as well as between the university members and government. This guidance includes suggestions on how to advocate for and enrich the UTSR program.

Organizational Strategy for the AAB

Any person who is from an institution that is on the UTSR Performing Member List and is interested in becoming an AAB member would be eligible to volunteer. The AAB will be made up of a Chair, a Co-Chair, a Secretary, Sub-Committee Chairs, and several at-large members (one from each of the technical focus areas--currently: aero/heat transfer, combustion, materials, and diagnostics). Sub-committee chairs will most likely include a Sub-committee Chair of Education, since the educational outreach activities are where the AAB can have a significant contribution to the UTSR Program. The defined tasks for each one of these members are given below. All AAB members will be responsible for proposing new UTSR activities, assessing current UTSR activities, and helping to carry out the activities seen fit by the AAB.

  • Chair: Conduct the AAB meetings and interface with the SCIES and IRB liaisons to insure that the AAB voice is heard
  • Co-Chair: Assist the Chair in organizing the meetings and interface with the academics in the UTSR Program to get their input to various activities
  • Secretary: Record the meeting minutes of the AAB meetings
  • Educational Sub-Committee Chair: Carry out the educational outreach activities by the AAB through course solicitations by government, industry, and academia
  • Members-at-Large: Insure that the academic voices are heard from each of the respective research areas

The following statements make up the by-laws for the AAB

  1. These positions will be two year appointments whereby the Chair will be an ex-officio member in the third year.
  2. The positions will rotate among those who are interested in volunteering.
  3. No one person can have more than two consecutive terms on the AAB, unless needed to retain at least 3 members from the previous board. 3 months notice is requested of those planning to step down from the board.
  4. The AAB members will be chosen at the annual UTSR Peer Review Workshop. The members will be voted in with a simple majority by those academics present at the Workshop.
  5. While the primary positions will remain the same, which include the Chair, Co-Chair, Secretary, and Members-at-Large, sub-committee positions will change depending upon the focus of the AAB activities. Additional sub-committee chairs may include, for example, educational outreach, enhancing diversity, and proposal evaluations.
  6. All meetings shall be conducted in accordance with the latest edition of Robert's Rules of Order.
  7. AAB meetings will be held in conjunction with the UTSR Peer Review Workshop and telecons will be held as needed.
