Welcome to the South Carolina Institute for Energy Studies The South Carolina Institute for Energy Studies at Clemson University was founded by the State Legislature in 1982 to help South Carolina and the nation address energy related issues.

University Turbine Systems Research Program

Project Overview

The University Turbine Systems Research (UTSR) Program began in 2002 as a follow-on to the successful Advanced Gas Turbine Systems Research (AGTSR) Program. This eight year project, funded jointly by the Department of Energy (DOE) and 17 industrial partners and administered by SCIES, brought together government, the US gas turbine industry and 111 performing member universities from across the US to develop the technologies needed for gas turbines running on synthesis gas and other high hydrogen fuels. SCIES assembled research priorities from the DOE and industry, prepared solicitations, coordinated the rating and ranking of proposals, and awarded and administered the research grants. 39 research awards at 19 universities were made. Research efforts focused on aerodynamics and heat transfer, combustion and materials. In addition, the UTSR fellows program placed graduate and upper level undergraduate students in summer research positions at participating industrial partners.

In 2007, the ASME conducted a peer review of the UTSR program, along with 20 other projects within the DOE Advanced Power Systems (APS) program portfolio for DOE headquarters. The UTSR

program was ranked 1st among the 21 APS programs reviewed and in their written comments the reviewers stated that the UTSR program is a benchmark project and an excellent use of government resources.
