The quality initiative of the project is a result of collabration from several groups. The Southern Shrimp Alliance, representing the shrimping industry from the eight gulf and south atlantic states, formed Wild American Shrimp, Inc. (WASI). The purpose of WASI is to create awareness of the wild-caught shrimp, market its outstanding qualities, and certify product based on standards that enhance those qiualities. The non-biased scientific information that WASI bases its certification system on comes from representatives of Universities from those eight states. Those representatives make up a group known as the Mark of Quality.

With the approval of the Shrimp Industry Task Force, Clemson University employs a Shrimp Quality team devoted to training the industry on suggested best mangement practices to produce top-quality shrimp. However, their main objective is to educate the industry about teh WASI program and assist them in producing certifiable product.
