South Carolina Seafood Alliance Work Plan 2003-2004

Direct product marketing

The executive director will develop recommendations for the Board on media marketing designed to create a preference for fresh, local seafood. The Executive director will seek outside established expertise to design multiple scenarios that could stand-alone or be used in concert, depending upon future available funding. Included in this will be consideration of television spots, billboard adds, multimedia kiosk presentations, video presentation development, visitor center pamphlets, newspaper and magazine adds, etc. Development ongoing. Identifying potential expertise completed by end of first quarter. Reports to Board and to Clemson University at least quarterly on selected entities estimates of costs and lead-time for product delivery. A year end report will be delivered summarizing the findings of the Alliances efforts to develop a direct product marketing program to create a preference for fresh, local seafood.

Seafood festivals

The Alliance will investigate establishing a series of yearly seafood festivals highlighting different in-season specialties at several locations along the coast to draw residents and tourists. This will be patterned after the very successful Beaufort Water Festival or Beaufort Shrimp Festival, but not be in competition with established festivals. The goal is to establish repetitive “experience outings” where information favorable to seafood business interests can be disseminated as well as affording industry business the opportunity to earn money from product sales at reasonable rates representative of true production costs. Determination of costs, manpower requirements’, potential sites, and timing of festivals will be subcontracted out to persons/groups familiar with the required effort. Potential subcontract entities to be determined by end of first quarter. Second quarter report from subcontracts reviewed. Initial report to the Board of Directors at third quarter meeting. Final deliverable report of findings at years end. Quarterly and final progress reports will be supplied to Clemson University.
