Objective 3.
To inventory shrimp industry assets to provide a basis for further action.

2.3.a. Action Plan
As a precursor to developing a comprehensive marketing plan, the industry has requested an independent, unbiased inventory of its assets. Drs. Mark Henry and David Barkley of Clemson University conducted a survey and study of the South Carolina shrimp trawling industry in 1999. In the past four years significant changes with related economic impacts have occurred in the shrimp industry. A new survey and study of the industry is needed to update the 1999 data and to provide current information for developing long range plans for the sustainability of the industry. This study will include but not be limited to a survey of the following industry information: number of commercial shrimpers, docks/buildings, annual shrimp catch, number of boats by size, age, and other characteristics, and linkages to other marketing channels. Survey data will be used to analyze profitability, marketing strategies, business planning, and other alternatives for successful business operation. The survey will be funded from the "South Carolina Only" appropriation and will be completed within the first six months.

2.3.b. Budget
Agricultural & Applied Economics faculty salary = $50,000.00, faculty fringes (26%) = $13,000.00, local cooperators = $20,320.00, supplies = $10,000.00, travel at customary Clemson University rates = $10,000.00. Total = $103,320.00.
