Objective 5.
To develop governmental and institutional support to include state seafood testing
programs.
The industry believes that while it has primary responsibility for
its vision and mission, there are a number of critical supporting roles
to be played by agencies of government at the local, state and federal
levels as well as by academic and other institutions. The industry has
made a preliminary allocation of 5% of its regional funding (~$184,300)
toward this support. These elements may include:
- Educate government officials at the state and federal levels on the
importance to the industry of creating new or enforcing existing standards
for chemical and other contaminants in both imported and domestic shrimp.
- Work with agencies of government to create a system with assigned
responsibilities to monitor industry quality assurance programs.
- Provide marketing support
- Conduct scientific research
- Manage fisheries for a sustainable yield
- Assist in creating higher education support programs for shrimp industry
dependents
Assist in coordinating SC industry plans with those of other states in
the region.
2.5.a . Chip Boling will continue as liaison (quarter-time
for two years) between government and industry partners. Budget includes
$30,455.00 in salary and $7,918.00 in fringes = $38,373.00 from
regional Federal funds.
2.5.b. Clemson will partner with SC Sea Grant for a
shared Seafood Extension Specialist who will assist the industry with
technical issues, governmental, partner and agency connections, and related
activities.
Budget: Salary of $45,000 (1 FTE), fringes of $15,000, supplies@ $1000,
travel = $3000; total costs = $64,000 from Federal regional
allocation.
2.5.c. Other currently unidentified contractors will
be secured to provide other services= $112,318 from
Federal regional allocation.
