CLEMSON UNIVERSITY POLICE MT.BIKE PATROL
The Clemson University Police Department initiated a Mountain Bike Patrol in the spring of 2002. The Mountain Bike Unit is part of the overall community oriented policing effort. Utilizing the Mountain Bike as a means of transportation allows the officers to be more approachable by the public. The Mountain Bike Patrol Officers have added ability to use their séances, move quietly, and interact better with the community.
Bicycle patrol is used by Police Officers of the University Police Department at all hours of the day and during special events. It has proven to be an effective and popular way for Officers to patrol the campus, because Bicycle Patrol allows Officers to increase their visibility and access to the campus community. Six of the Police Officers assigned to the Patrol section are trained and equipped to use these bicycles on patrol. Over the past few months, seven new Officers were trained and Certified for the Bicycle Patrol. To be certified, Officers must complete and pass a 24 hour Basic Mountain Bike Patrol class.
The Bicycles provide more "face-to-face" contact with the general public, and gives the Officers the ability to assist in problem resolution in the areas of Crime Prevention and Traffic complaints, Just to name a few.
If you would like more information about the Mountain Bike Certification Course or have any questions about bicycle safety classes, Please contact the Clemson University Police Department at (864) 656-2222.
