Examples of Local Assistance Offered to Fire Victims

The American Red Cross offers fire victims:

  • Temporary hotel accommodations in Easley immediately after the fire
  • A voucher for the purchase of supplies from Wal-Mart
  • A voucher for the purchase of groceries at Bi-Lo
  • A voucher for the first month's rent on confirmed accommodations
  • Financial assistance to replace prescription glasses and medicines

The Clemson Rotary Club offers fire victims:

  • Emergency funds for affected individuals. Contact Ethel Pettigrew at 654-8999.

Clemson University offers:

  • $50 is added to each student's TigerStripe account.
    An approved list of students affected by the fire will be provided to Tiger 1 Card Services. Tiger 1 will deposit $50 into each students TigerStripe account within twenty-four hours; students do not need to request. Tiger 1 will absorb the cost of replacing the Tiger 1 card if destroyed in the fire. Questions should be directed by phone to Tiger 1 Card Services 656-0763 or by email TIGER1-L@CLEMSON.EDU.
  • Temporary hotel accommodations are made available immediately after the fire.
    A representative from University Housing will work with students at the site of the fire to arrange for immediate, temporary hotel accommodations in the Clemson area if the student needs a place to stay for one or two nights.
  • Upon request, students may move into available on-campus housing.
    For some students the best option for immediate, affordable living accommodations is to move onto campus. On-campus housing is rented by the semester and does not require the student to sign a long-term lease. A representative from University Housing (656-2295) is available to work with students who would like to move onto campus for the remainder of the semester.
  • Upon request, counseling services are available at Redfern Health Center.
    The trauma experienced from being the victim of a fire and the displacement and changes that follow may result in the need for confidential counseling services. If you would like to talk with a counselor, call 656-2451 to schedule an appointment. You should feel free to tell the receptionist that you need to be seen as soon as possible.
  • The University Bookstore will loan students books that were lost in the fire.
    Students who have lost their books in a fire may go to the University Bookstore and ask for �loaner books� to replace those they have lost. The University Bookstore will have a list of the names of the students who may request 'loaner books,' and if the Bookstore is not able to loan the book, Student Emergency Funds can be allocated for the purchase of books through the University Bookstore.   • The University Libraries will absorb the loss of library books destroyed in the fire.
    The University Libraries will have a list of names of the students affected by the fire. If students' borrowed library books have been destroyed by the fire, the University Libraries will absorb the expense of the destroyed books.
  • Laptop computers can be borrowed from the DCIT Support Center.
    On a limited basis, the DCIT Support Center located in the University Union underneath Harcombe Dining Hall) will lend students laptop computers for academic work until the students can replace their computers lost in the fire.   • Emergency Loans are available for student victims of a fire.
    Financial Aid coordinates student loans on an as-needed basis. Call 656-3431 and tell the receptionist that you are a victim of the recent fire and need an appointment to discuss an emergency loan.
  • Upon request, documentation for class absence is sent to students' professors.
    In some instances the fire and individual needs resulting from the fire cause students to miss some of their classes. Upon request of the student, the Dean of Students Office will notify the student's professors and college dean that the student has been a victim of a fire and may need to miss class due to this crisis situation. If you would like for your professors to be notified, contact Dean Joy Smith, 202 Hendrix Student Center, 656-0471, joy@clemson.edu.
  • University drop/add dates may be extended for students who are victims of a fire.
    In some instances the fire and individual needs resulting from the fire cause students to fall behind in their academic work and need to drop a class late in the semester. Upon request of the student, the Dean of Students Office will work with officials in Academic Affairs to extend the class drop date and/or the university withdrawal date for students who find this necessary due to this crisis situation and its affects. If you find that you need this assistance, contact Dean Joy Smith, 202 Hendrix Student Center, 656-0471, joy@clemson.edu. Dean Smith will work with Undergraduate Academic Services or the Graduate School on your behalf.
  • Student Emergency Funds are available to meet the critical needs of students.
    Student Affairs and Financial Aid staff work together to provide emergency funds to meet the critical needs of students who are victims of a fire. Students should contact any of the following people as soon as possible to discuss their critical needs resulting from loss associated with the fire.
  • Other individual assistance is offered as needed.
