A Safer Clemson Safety Update

Dear Students,

We in the Division of Student Affairs take our mission of creating a supportive environment conducive to student learning very seriously, and we strive to not only support a collaborative, diverse campus, but a safe campus as well. The rest of the University community joins us in this safety focus, and many significant enhancements in campus safety have occurred over the past year.

Let me take this opportunity to announce some of these enhancements. New safety management and warning systems are now in place to keep us all better informed. We now have voice-warning sirens that will notify the Clemson Family of imminent emergencies, ranging from natural disasters to impending danger on campus. Our new safety Web site, http://www.clemson.edu/cusafety, gives you full details on matters related to safety, as well as an option for students to sign up for cell phone text-message alerts.

We are proud  of several other enhancements to our campus safety framework, including: the launch of the CARE Network to help faculty and staff identify students in crisis and diffuse problems before they escalate; the addition of six new police officers to the University Police Department; the implementation of an e-911 system; and the creation of the EMpower Clemson office to heighten awareness on alcohol use and related risks.

I would also like to ask all Clemson students to update their contact information through
Student Information Systems (SIS) on the Clemson Web site. It is imperative that internal college offices have access to your email addresses and cell phone numbers so that we can incorporate you into our new security alert programs. Please access the “Update Your Address” option located under the heading “My Academic Information” to make changes.

Thank you in advance for helping Clemson maintain its reputation as a safe and happy campus!

Sincerely,

Dr. Gail A. DiSabatino
Vice President for Student Affairs
