A Fraternity or Sorority RA oversees the facilities, residents, and operations of his or her chapter's area. He or she will foster an environment that meets the needs for brotherhood or sisterhood development, safety, and security. The RA will promote and exemplify, through his or her leadership, the foundational values and principles of the fraternity or sorority. He or she will assist in the development and enhancement of a positive living experience in the chapter's University Housing. He or she will also be responsible for relaying important information regarding University Housing to the individual members.
With an understanding and an appreciation for the concept of "self-governance," the Fraternity or Sorority RA should oversee the operation of the chapter's housing with the chapter leadership and support the cultivation of the intellectual and personal development of the brotherhood or sisterhood. The RA will also be expected to understand and abide by the University Housing Contract, Addendum (as applicable) and the General Student Regulations as well as holding the members who reside in University Housing and their guests responsible for these policies.
General Responsibilities
- Understand and advocate the Nine Basic Expectations for Fraternal Members established by the North-American Interfraternity Conference.
- Demonstrate an understanding of the vision, values, and mission statement of the Fraternity or Sorority system.
- Demonstrate an understanding of the values, principles and goals of the organization and foster and environment that supports these values, principles and goals.
- Encourage the development of the culture of the chapter as a place for scholarship, leadership, and self-discovery.
- Work with the alumni and chapter leadership to encourage the development of appropriate social behavior and actions that are respectful of the individual, the chapter, the fraternity or sorority system, and the Clemson community.
- Be available to support and work with the chapter officers, Executive Committee, and individual members.
- Assist in the development of a sense of community within the chapter and between the various chapters that comprise the residential community.
- Be a participant in open communication with members, alumni advisors, the Faculty Advisor, members of the Alumni Board, national representatives, the Fraternity or Sorority Housing Office and the Office of Fraternity or Sorority Life.
- Respect and demonstrate discretion about private chapter matters.
- Oversee the opening and closing of the chapter's area prior to the start and end of each semester.
- Report any maintenance issues that need repair to Facilities.
- Conduct room and common area inspections on a regular basis.
- Know and explain all safety and emergency standards and procedures.
- Facilitate the chapter's room assignments with the Resident Directors for the fall and spring semester as well as assist with the chapter's room change process.
