First Year Experience (FYE) Resident Assistants
 

The FYE program is structured to connect the learning opportunities in the residence hall with those in the campus community. RAs should encourage students to take full advantage of the programs designed to promote a successful transition to college.

Learning outcomes for the FYE program include:

  • Students will demonstrate the knowledge and value of campus resources, services and opportunities by utilizing these to aid in their successful transition to the campus community.
  • Students will gain an understanding of their role and responsibilities within a community.
  • Students will identify and develop skills and strategies that enable the achievement of their academic goals.
  • Students will develop an awareness of self as it relates to interacting with others in their community.
  • Students will gain skills that support their interpersonal growth and development.

General Responsibilities

  • Understand the needs of first year students.
  • Mediate conflicts and work with residents to achieve mutually beneficial resolutions.
  • Oversee the opening and closing of housing at the beginning and end of each semester.
  • Report any maintenance issues to Facilities.
  • Conduct room and common area inspections on a regular basis.
  • Assist students by working at the front desk.
  • Know and explain all safety and emergency standards and procedures.
  • Enforce all University and Housing policies and document any policy violations.

  • Establish a positive, healthy, and helpful relationship with residents.
  • Emphasize and maintain an atmosphere conducive to academic pursuit.
  • Foster an environment that promotes mutual respect among the residents and emphasizes courtesy, consideration.
  • Encourage contribution to and involvement in the Clemson community.
  • Assess the needs and interests of the residents and respond by planning and implementing programs and events.
  • Understand and promote community development.
  • Assist residents with personal and academic concerns; be knowledgeable of various campus and community resources and serve as a referral agent as needed.
