Summer Resident Assistant
 

A resident assistant oversees the facilities, residents and operations of an apartment block to create an environment that meets the residents' needs for growth, safety and security. The overall goal of a summer school resident assistant is to facilitate effective community building, assist with opening and closing during summer sessions, and work desk hours in an overall effort to assist students with their academic and social development. 
 
Basic Qualifications

  • Have and maintain a cumulative minimum grade point ratio of 2.5
  • Must have lived in University Housing for at least one semester
  • Have an interest in working with students' needs and concerns
  • Enjoy relating with students, both individually and in groups
  • Have a commitment to uphold and support policies and programs of University Housing and Clemson University

Benefits

  • RAs are paid $6.55 per hour. Minimum wage payment will change to $7.25 on July 1, 2009 in accordance with the United States Department of Labor
  • RAs receive free summer housing during employment

General Responsibilities

Oversee and be available to work during the Opening and Closing of the apartments(s) prior to the start and at the end of each Maymester and summer school term. Dates are as follows:  

Maymester: Opening May 9-10, 2009-Closing May 27, 2009
Summer I: Opening May 18, 2009-Closing June 25, 2009
Summer II: Opening June 29, 2009-Closing August 6 & 9, 2009

  • Work to create and build an inclusive community amongst all residents
  • Maintain a positive attitude and serve as a role model to peers
  • Be available and actively participate in training for summer Resident Assistants on May 6-8 2009 
  • Assist in care and concern check-ins when needed and follow up with the RD and AC staff promptly
  • Check-in residents upon arrival, and check-out residents upon departure
  • Conduct room and common-area inspections on a regular basis
  • Attend weekly staff meetings with the Resident Director and attend area meetings as designated
  • Keep open communication with the Resident Director and Area Coordinator including but not limited to returning phone calls promptly, checking the office mailbox, voicemail, and email at a minimum of once every 24 hours
  • Understand the community development standards put forth by the RD and/or AC and work to implement in assigned area
  • Enforce University Housing policy when necessary and document incidents thoroughly
  • Work weeknight duty, which includes being accessible by phone in the residence hall or area and available for emergencies from 8:00 p.m. to 8:00 a.m. on the assigned duty nights (All resident assistants serve a period of duty each summer session for their respective apartment or area.)
  • Work weekend duty, which is assigned to all resident assistants each session (Weekend duty includes being accessible by phone in the apartment or area and available for emergencies.)
  • Work a minimum of 10 desk hours per week
  • Understand how to mediate roommate conflicts and work with residents to achieve mutually beneficial resolutions
  • Work with the students who reside in the apartments(s) to report any maintenance or repair issues to the proper person
  • Know and explain all safety and emergency standards and procedures to all students who reside on the apartments(s)
  • Facilitate incoming residents' adjustment to college issues and outgoing residents' adjustment to off-campus and post college-living issues
  • Emphasize and maintain an atmosphere conducive to academic pursuit
  • Assess the needs of the residents and address those needs with programs and events
  • Assist residents with concerns while remaining professional in all situations
  • Be aware of various campus and community resources that may be of assistance
  • Recognize when a concern or situation is beyond the ability of the resident assistant and involve the Resident Director, Area Coordinator or other personnel to assist in a resolution
  • Understand how to respond to emergency situations that may occur in the area and know the available resources and when to use them
  • Keep the Resident Director and Area Coordinator informed of incidents, concerns and solutions related to the apartments(s) and its residents  

Terms of Employment

  • Resident assistants are charged to uphold certain policies and meet certain expectations. Failure to do so results in documentation of inappropriate performance and may lead to termination.
  • Resident directors evaluate their resident assistants at the completion of their summer assignment. If a resident assistant fails to satisfactorily fulfill the job duties, responsibilities and expectations, the resident director develops an action plan for the resident assistant to follow to be reconsidered for another term of employment during the following academic year. If the resident assistant fails to satisfactorily meet the requirements of the action plan, the resident director will not consider him or her for another term of employment.
  • A resident assistant may be rehired for another term of employment based on a satisfactory or higher rating on his or her performance evaluation.
