Mission Statement
The mission of the Office of Community & Ethical Standards is to promote an environment, which encourages students to uphold Clemson University core values and standards. OCES provides programs, which educate students regarding the consequences of their behavior and empower students to become responsible members of our community.
Guiding Principles
Our Guiding Principles by defintion provide "guidance" to our staff on how we shall acheive our office mission and strategic goals. In addition, these principles detail our plans for interacting and educating our student populations.
- Pursue educational and developmental outcomes through adjudication and education with Clemson University's core values of integrity, honesty and respect.
- Promote self evaluation and awareness.
- Encourage students to accept personal responsibility for action and consequences.
- Educate students in regard to how individual behaviors can affect the larger community and the importance of making informed decisions.
- Help maintain an environment conducive to health and wellness through proactive education and adjudication.
- Instill a sense of pride in a community which rejects prejudice and intolerance.
- Foster respect for the rights of others and teach the ideals of community living.
- Promote lifelong personal discovery, leadership and service.
Office Objectives
- Students will have a better understanding of expectations of the Clemson Community.
- Through the use of technology and new processes we will improve our operational functionality and maintain the integrity of our information.
- As a result of going through the discipline process, students will have a better understanding of the university's rules and expectations,the effect of their behaviors on others, practice effective conflict mediation, and demonstrate ethical development by complying with Clemson University's rules and regulations.
Staff
Our office is staffed with five full-time student affairs professionals. Our Director, Alesia Smith has served the students at Clemson University for over 12 years leading the Office of Community and Ethical Standards. Ms. Smith comes to us from Chicago, Illinois. Our Associate Director of Community Standards is Wade Livingston. Wade just joined our office this year and in this position Wade oversees the student conduct process and serves as an advisor to the Clemson University Student Government Attorney General. Wade comes to our office from North Carolina. Justin Carter is our Associate Director of Outreach and Education. In this role, Justin works to create developmental and educational opportunities for Clemson students and encourages engagement through a variety of media. Justin has been with the office for a year now and comes to us from Akron, Ohio. Lael Barrineau is the Office Manager for OCES and he is a native of South Carolina. Lael joined our office at the end of the 2007-08 school year. And finally, Jo Walker serves as the Administrative Specialist for OCES. Jo is also a native of South Carolina and has been with the office for three years.
We are also joined by a group of very talented students. Claudia Howell, is the Graduate Assistant and works with Wade on the coordination of the student conduct process. We also are joined by two student assistants Tanis Blassingame and Luaren Cunningham. Our office is also supported by a host of graduate interns and undergraduate students interested in student conduct administration.
