Parents' Council History

Dr. Max Lennon, then-president of the University, formed the Clemson University Parents' Council Advisory Board in September 1990. The purpose of the council was "to create a plan for a comprehensive Clemson University parents' program." The council began with 10 non-alumni couples. The idea of excluding alumni was implemented to make sure people who were not familiar with Clemson's rich tradition would come to know more about the University.

Funding for the initial advisory board came from the University. The University budgeted $5,000 for the board with the intent that the board would become self-supporting after three years.

In the third year of its existence, the council decided to invite Clemson alumni to also serve on the board. Also during the early years, the council adopted four goals, which remain the focus today. The goals are:

  • Offer a parent's perspective to the University.
  • Be well informed ambassadors for the University;
  • Assist in academic recruiting;
  • Promote fund-raising efforts for student-related activities, facilities and organizations;

From the original 10 couples, the Parents' Council has grown to represent all Clemson parents. The University supports the council through the provision of an advisor from the Division of Student Affairs and a graduate assistant who provides tremendous support.
