Campus Construction Projects Impact Parking

1/7/08 - West library lot to close permanently

A construction fence and accompanying signs will be installed this week to direct pedestrians and motorists around the site of the Rhodes Engineering Research Center expansion.

This project between Riggs Hall and Cooper Library will require the permanent closure of parking lot E-16, west of the library. ADA spaces for vehicles with handicap permits and 24/7 employees spaces will be relocated to the east library lot, E-15.

To help lessen the impact of this loss of employee spaces, the temporary gravel lot at Cherry Road and Perimeter Road will be restricted to "employee parking only". Off-campus students must park only in commuter parking lots as shown on the parking map, available online at http://www.clemson.edu/studentaffairs/parking/multimedia/pdf/ParkingMap.pdf

This is one of many projects included in President Jim Barker's address to the May general faculty meeting when he announced a much-needed and long-overdue investment in physical and technological infrastructure for the core campus that is of a magnitude not seen since the 1950s, '60s and '70s.

"We expect to build, break ground or begin planning and design work on facilities and infrastructure projects totaling at least $225 million between now and 2010," said Barker. (http://www.clemson.edu/clemsonworld/archive/2007/summer07/presview.htm)

Parking Services Director Geary Robinson said Clemson is considering ways to improve the parking for the short term and the long term, but that all members of the community need to be patient and understanding during this period of growth.

"We have an excellent on-campus and off-campus transit system that is open to faculty, staff and students," said Robinson. "Using this free public transportation could alleviate parking issues for many individuals who come to campus."

Transit Information

Clemson Area Transit provides safe, convenient, fare-free transportation from the perimeter parking lots to campus locations on days that classes meet. For specific information about CAT routes and schedules, see their web site at http://www.catbus.com.
