Self Protection & Risk Reduction

How can I reduce my risk of being violated?

  • Sexual assault and relationship violence are NEVER the victim’s fault and at times cannot be avoided. However, there are steps that can be taken in order to reduce the risk of sexual assault or relationship violence.
  • Trust your instincts. If a situation makes you feel uncomfortable or if you feel that something is not right, then leave.
  • Go out in groups and make sure that each person makes it home safely.
  • Date rape drugs are easily put into drinks. Always prepare your own drinks or watch carefully when it is being prepared and never leave your drink unattended.
  • Never feel obligated to perform sexual acts when on a date.
  • Avoid relationships in which the person is jealous, possessive, and/or controlling.
  • Be assertive with others regarding your boundaries.
  • Communicate your needs and intentions openly and clearly.
