Peer Education

To become a Peer Health Educator, students enroll in a three credit hour class, EDC 390, which meets once a week throughout the semester. Students are trained in counseling and presentation skills and on the health topics that impact college students most. This class is a perfect elective for students who are interested in education, psychology and counseling, or health. It offers students the opportunity to explore areas of career interest and to be a leader on campus.

Student peer educators work with the health promotion staff to raise awareness and provide education by assisting with presentations and by working on our large health promotion events. Our PHE’s serve as a valuable resource for students on a wide variety of psychosocial and wellness issues and find that the course offers them skills that are applicable in many areas of their lives.

You many register for the Peer Health Education class on line. Make sure to register for the section of EDC 390 that lists Jennifer Goree as the instructor, as the other sections cover different material.

Peer educators are available to provide information and offer referrals to on-campus resources. PHE’s also offer wellness and prevention presentations for residential halls, student organizations, clubs, athletic teams, sororities, and fraternities. To schedule a presentation by a PHE, please call (864) 656-1823.
