Student Health Insurance Plan

“The information contained on this page is for the current 2008-2009 academic year. "

Clemson University makes available to students at competitive premiums, a Student Insurance Plan. This plan insures the student against major expenses accompanying an accident, illness or hospitalization. This plan is administered by Pearce and Pearce, Inc. http://www.studentinsurance.com

To protect your good health and financial stability, we encourage all students to carry adequate health insurance coverage. Students should review their health insurance plan prior to coming to college. At some point during their college years, many students find themselves no longer eligible for health insurance through their parents or employer. Students who at any time find themselves without adequate coverage are urged to consider purchasing the Student Insurance Plan. Coverage is available to student spouses and/or children when the student is enrolled in the plan. Dependent spouses must initially seek care at Redfern; however, dependent children are not eligible for service at Redfern. All international and full time graduate students are required to have the Student Health Insurance Plan unless proof of adequate alternate coverage is submitted. For more information on insurance, waivers, and FAQ's, visit the Graduate Student Insurance website.

The Student Insurance Plan and the health fee are designed to complement each other and requires the student/spouse to initially seek care at Redfern for treatment of illness or injury. If the necessary treatment or service cannot be provided by the student health center, referral to a community provider will be made. Students/spouses insured by the Student Insurance Plan MUST be referred by Redfern for care or treatment at other locations except in the following situations:

  1. Medical emergency
  2. Redfern Health Center is closed
  3. Student is more than 30 miles from campus and requires medical care.

Our Student Insurance Office is available to help students with enrollment questions, and to assist, when needed, with issues regarding claims. However, we DO NOT adjudicate claims. For further information contact the Student Insurance Manager, Vickie Metz, at (864) 656-3561 or email svickie@clemson.edu.
