2019 Peer Mentors


CONNECTIONS Peer Mentors serve as representatives of Clemson University and the CONNECTIONS program. CONNECTIONS is a retention initiative that aims to support students through peer mentoring and a unique living-learning community. First-year students from culturally diverse backgrounds and majors are paired with upper-class student leaders of color who serve as mentors and role models.

Peer mentors provide academic and developmental support through interpersonal relationships, leadership experiences, campus and community resources, and collaboration with campus partners. Peer mentors play a key role in the transition, retention, and success of our first-year students in the CONNECTIONS experience.

Things to Know:

  • Serve as a role model for new students by displaying the responsibility and maturity of an upperclassman student leader.

  • Acquaint new students with the campus environment.

  • Encourage new students to utilize campus resources and participate in campus activities and events by doing so yourself - lead by example!

  • Perform reasonable tasks/assignments needed to ensure mentors and mentees have a successful experience.

  • Other expectations as discussed among mentor team and Student Transitions and Family Programs staff.

  • Maintain a minimum 2.5 cumulative GPA and continue to be in good standing with the university for academics and conduct.

  • Must be an enrolled full-time student at Clemson University in 2020 fall semester and 2021 spring semester.

  • Consent to a background check.

  • Attend all scheduled mentor training modules in 2020 spring semester

  • First-time mentors must register for and attend a 3-credit hour course, EDC 3900, during 2020 fall semester.

  • Be autonomous, reliable, responsible, confident, sincere, flexible, dedicated, considerate with enthusiastic approaches to work with CONNECTIONS participants, fellow peer mentors and Clemson University staff.

  • Possess basic communication skills in order to facilitate group discussion, and address concerns and issues with the greater team development.

  • Be comfortable and competent in discussing delicate social issues with students, peers and staff.

  • Relate to people from diverse and multicultural backgrounds.

  • Demonstrate a desire to learn about Clemson University, including policies, people and programs.

  • Possess a willingness to learn about the experiences of others and share your own experiences.

  • Applications for the 2021-2022 mentor team will open in November 2020.
  • The application process includes an online form and an in-person interview.
