CONNECTIONS

Connections

CONNECTIONS is an initiative to assist first-year students that identify as a student of color (African-American, Black, Hispanic/Latinx, Asian, Native American, multiracial) or first generation student with their transition to Clemson University and is coordinated by Student Transitions and Family Programs.

The primary components of the CONNECTIONS Experience include peer mentoring and a living-learning community for our incoming first-year students. Through our program students will have opportunities for transformation related to personal development, academic engagement, culture and diversity, a support network and involvement. Our peer mentors are:

  • Diverse in terms of majors, social identities and experiences.

  • Equipped to support new students in transitions, campus involvement, development of goals, establishment of connects, and the Clemson Experience.

Our primary living-learning community, located in Holmes Hall, builds a sense of belonging to Clemson, forms a support network and begins creating the student's college experience. The community experience includes:

  • CONNECTIONS only freshman seminar

  • Social activities (canvas painting, bowling, game nights, etc.)

  • Lunchtime dialogues (grad school preparation, summer planning, etc.)

  • In-hall academic tutoring through the Academic Success Center

In addition to our Holmes Hall experience, we also have partnered with the Residents in Science and Engineering Program (RiSE) to provide the CONNECTIONS experience to residents in Byrnes Hall and Lever Hall. We believe the combined experiences of peer mentoring and self-exploration through CONNECTIONS and the academic and career engagement through RiSE create an environment that fosters success in the transition of new college freshmen. The experience will provide opportunities for:

  • Support from a community of peers with similar academic and social experiences.

  • Engagement with faculty and staff invested in the your success in and out of the classroom.

  • Understanding your connection between your social identities and the field of science and engineering.
