Student Accidents, Illnesses and Other Family Emergencies

We would like to remind all faculty and staff at Clemson University of the procedures handled by Student Affairs pertaining to student accidents, illnesses, other family emergencies and deaths.

When a student is injured or critically ill, the Office of the Dean of Student Affairs(located in 202 Hendrix Student Center) is responsible for maintaining contact with the student, the hospital and the student's family, in addition to keeping professors informed. In these circumstances, this office serves as a central point of communication. Questions, concerns and/or information to be shared should be directed to 656-0471 when assisting students with these types of situations.

In case of a student death(on or off campus), please call the Office of the Vice President for Student Affairs at 656-2161. It is important that early contact with the family is established.

Class Absences

University policy states that all class absences are matters to be resolved between the professor and the student(see Class Attendance Policy for Undergraduates in the Student Handbook). In keeping with that policy, Student Affairs staff does not write "excuses" for class absences, nor does any other office/person on campus. We do assist students in the above emergency situations by notifying the students' professors of the situation as requested when the student is unable to do so. Letters should be sent to professors only in cases of hospitalization, accidents, lengthy illnesses(usually when students are out more than one or two days) and, of course, family emergencies in which a student has a death in his/her immediate family. While we are happy to assist students in a true emergency, we do not contact professors for non-emergency reasons.

Thank you for your assistance in these matters. Please let us know if you have any questions or concerns.

Associate Vice President for Student Affairs
and Dean of Students

Tornado Safety

All students and employees of Clemson University should be aware that upper South Carolina is subject to tornado-generating weather conditions.

What to do in the event of a tornado: If a cloudy sky becomes stormy or rough in appearance you should --

  • Tune in to local radio or area television broadcasts for possible advisories from the National Weather Service.
  • Remain alert for a worsening sky and the approach of storms, especially from the area generally southwest of Clemson.
  • Preplan your refuge -- this action is the key to your safety!

A tornado watch indicates that conditions are right for spawning tornadoes. If a tornado watch is issued, designate an observer to monitor the weather conditions.

Individuals should observe the southwestern sky and listen for further advisories. Be sure that you and any group that you may be supervising will be able

  • A basement area with no windows, especially a civil defense designated shelter
  • A bottom floor hallway
  • An interior hallway or small interior room with no windows

Do not seek refuge in gymnasiums, auditoriums, dining halls, workshops, laboratories, classrooms, exterior rooms with windows, elevators, stairwells, non-masonry buildings, barns, utility areas, mobile units or vehicles.

Do not seek refuge outside. However, if there is no other choice, plan to lie flat in a ditch or culvert.

Take cover before it strikes!

When a tornado warning is broadcast in the Clemson area, go immediately to your refuge! (A tornado warning announces that a tornado has been sighted in the area.)

Upon observing dark, rolling clouds, unusual lightning, hail, driving rain, sudden increase in wind or possible a funnel cloud, go immediately to your refuge.

Upon hearing a buzzing or roaring sound, run to your refuge! Stay off elevators! Do not use stairwells when the storm is striking!

When inside your refuge, sit on the floor. Do not smoke. If a tornado strikes, duck your head between your knees and cover the back of your head with your hands for protection.

Leave your refuge with caution. Multiple tornadoes can occur in one storm.
