Sustainability Week 2013

Come join us from February 18th-22nd for a weeklong event that highlights what Clemson is doing for sustainability as well as where we hope to go. Learn about any number of the diverse aspects of sustainability by participating in each of our themed days. Monday will be focused on waste, Tuesday on transportation, Wednesday on food, Thursday on energy, and Friday will be our local day. You will have the opportunity to attend lectures, go on tours, participate in workshops, and much more throughout Sustainability Week. Below you will find the schedule of events, and beneath that you will find descriptions of each of those events. We hope to see you there so that we can celebrate Clemson's achievements and push forward together for a more sustainable tomorrow.

Sustainability Week Schedule

Monday (Waste):

Sustainability Action Plan Presentation (Leidy Klotz)
Ever wondered what Clemson is doing to become a more sustainable campus? Join us to hear Leidy Klotz talk about initiatives currently going on at Clemson and the Sustainability Action Plan for the future.

Diversity Education Presentation (Liz Woods & Rachel Kline)

Clemson’s Waste Management Plan/Economics of Recycling (Tom Jones)
A university serving over 20,000 students and another nearly 4,000 staff members generates a lot of waste. Come listen to Tom Jones, Director of Custodial Services, talk trash. He'll highlight where Clemson's waste ends up and how recycling affects the economy.

Waste Audit
Looking for an opportunity to get directly involved in the week's festivities? Bring your organization or 8-20 of your friends to the Kite Hill Recycling Center to sort campus recycling for one hour and see for yourself what ends up in Clemson recycling bins. T-shirts will be given to participants!

Tuesday (Transportation):

Biodiesel Tour
Want to see how cooking oil waste generated on campus is converted into fuel that is used by CU Facilities vehicles and equipment? Come for a tour of the on-campus biodiesel facility for a behind-the-scenes look that will fuel your passion for sustainable transportation.

Bike “Checkup” Stations
Is your bike not what it used to be? Don’t let that slow you down. Cycle on down to Fike, Library Bridge, or the Horseshoe for a free bicycle checkup and get your beautiful two-wheeler back in great condition.

Show off new CAT bus
The hottest auto show this year isn’t in Chicago or Detroit, but right here in Clemson! Take the Blue Route to be among the first to go for a ride on the new and improved CAT bus.

Park & Bike from Y-Beach
Do you drive to campus and hate having to search for a parking spot?  We have the solution.  Park your car at Y-Beach and ride your bike to campus in the incredibly convenient bike lanes.  Just think of how much time and energy you’ll save!

Wednesday (Food):

Tours
Come ride Tiger Transit for a tour through three of Clemson’s best kept secrets…

  • Recycling Center:  Ever wondered how recycling works? Get a behind-the-scenes look at how what we throw away can be reused with a tour of the Recycling Center at Kite Hill, and you will look at waste in a whole new light.
  • Compost Facility:  Ever thought about composting or just curious about how it works? Come for a tour of the Compost Facility to see why food “waste” doesn’t have to be wasted.
  • Organic Farm:  You’ve seen organic labels on food products, but do you know what organic farming really means? Find out at a tour of Clemson’s own Organic Farm and experience the organic difference firsthand.

Sustainability Café
Hungry for food and knowledge? Come to the Sustainability Café to discuss sustainability over lunch, while satisfying your mind and your stomach.

Local Foods in Dining Halls
Want a taste of what local agriculture has to offer? Stop by the campus dining halls to sample some fresh, delicious local foods, served all day.

Thursday (Energy):

Building Tours
Are you interested in how the buildings on campus are becoming more sustainable? Stop by Lee III and the new Life Sciences buildings for a guided tour of the most sustainable buildings on campus. Hear from the architects themselves all while getting an inside look at the innovative building features used to create a more sustainable campus.

Lights Out Day
In order to promote energy use awareness, today is Lights Out Day! Be sure to minimize the use of lights throughout the day by taking advantage of day lighting and by turning off all lights when not in use. This will be a great opportunity to reduce energy consumption for the sustainability competition.

Sustainability Teach-In
Join us throughout the day at the Sustainability Teach-In to learn from knowledgeable and passionate speakers about all things sustainable. Be sure to stick around for the dinner and movie that will follow the presentations.

Slow Food Dinner
Would you like to take part in a global, grassroots movement with thousands of members in over 150 countries?  The Slow Food movement links the pleasure of food with a commitment to community and the environment. Come eat a delicious dinner that is good for you, good for the people who grew the food, and good for the planet. ($5/student with ID and $7 for others)

Friday (Local):

Sustainability Fair
Come learn about local vendors and student organizations, as well as how sustainability plays a part in their day to day work.  Check out the sustainable products, sample locally grown foods, and participate in the many activities set up at the booths in the Hendrix meeting rooms.  You won’t want to miss this!

*Note - Cards with a list of the week’s events will be available throughout the week and stickers will be given for attending each event.  Students who bring a card with 2 stickers to the Sustainability Fair on Friday will receive a free t-shirt.
