DESCRIPTION:
This training was developed by the Transportation Curriculum Coordination Council (TCCC) in partnership with NHI to review reading of road plans, both state and county, and structures, both bridge and culvert. This course is recommended for the Transportation Curriculum Coordination Council levels I - IV.
The ability to read plans is essential for anyone involved in highway and/or bridge construction. This course contains modules covering both basic plan reading instructions, as well as, providing a more in-depth level of instruction for anyone seeking more information and/or a review of plan reading.
The highway plan reading modules cover the title page, legend, notes, curves, stationing, utilities, right of way, and more. The bridge module contains information on substructures, superstructures, and the plan details pertaining to the parts of each. The culvert module includes plan sheets on steel placement, walls, footings, and the other details of culvert plans.
OUTCOMES:
Upon completion of the course, participants will be able to:
- Recognize plan sheets for highway, bridge, culvert construction
- Recognize station locations and calculate; cross section, profile, and plan views; centerline location; point of intersection; and a variety of plan details
- Recognize plan sheet for all parts of both a bridge substructure and superstructure
- Understand the terminology and symbols used when reading plans
TARGET AUDIENCE:
This training is designed for FHWA, State, and local agencies and their industry counterparts involved in the construction process of highways, bridges, or culverts. It is applicable to anyone desiring a better understanding of plan reading. |
