Statistics Basics for Asphalt Technicians

Course Description:

This course will cover statistics in a very basic and practical manner. Examples from everyday life will be used to illustrate the concepts presented. It will explain the importance of variability and how it affects all aspects of asphalt concrete production and placing. The importance of random sampling will be explained along with the importance of precisely following all stipulated sampling and testing procedures.

The course will provide a basic understanding of the important statistical measures of mean and standard deviation, and will explain how the actions of asphalt technicians can affect these measures. Course participants will obtain an understanding of why asphalt specifications are written as they are, and will also learn how material variability leads to risks to both the contractor and the owner.

The course is intended to provide a basic understanding of the importance of statistics and variability in the day–to–day activities of every asphalt technician.

Course Instructor:

Jim Burati will serve as the instructor for the course. Jim is the Director of the SC Transportation Technology Transfer Service. He has over 25 years experience in the development and analysis of specifications for asphalt materials. He has written training manuals on quality assurance (QA) specifications and process control for the National Highway Institute (NHI) and the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA).

Jim is the developer of a week—long NHI course on QA. He has also taught statistical specification concepts to numerous state highway agencies. For the FHWA Jim has recently completed a manual that serves as a guide for all states to use to develop QA specifications. Jim assisted the SCDOT in developing their initial QA specification for hot mix asphalt as well as the new SCDOT asphalt specification that will be implemented in the upcoming construction season

Who Should Attend:

Hot mix asphalt technicians, asphalt roadway technicians, and those who supervise such personnel should attend. Anyone that is associated with asphalt production and paving operations can benefit from the concepts presented in this course. While all the examples will be in the asphalt area, the concepts presented in this course apply equally well to all highway and construction mate

Types of Specifications:

What are they and why are they different?

Why is what I do important?

Sampling

What is random sampling and why is it important?

How do I select a random sample?

Variability

What is it and why is it important to me?

What are the sources of variability?

How does what I do affect variability?

Why is it so important to follow procedures?

Statistical Measures

What are a mean and a standard deviation, and why should I care?

Why is a normal distribution normal?

Quality Control Testing versus Acceptance Testing

Which am I doing?

Why does it matter which I’m doing?

(Adjourn: 4:00PM)
