Superpave for Low Volume Roads

Thursday, October 30, 2003, Columbia
Ramada Inn
8105 Two Notch Rd & US1
Columbia, SC 29201
Ph: 803-736-5600

Course Description:

This course will provide an introduction to the latest major innovation in Hot Mix Asphalt (HMA) technology—the Superpave system. South Carolina DOT is in the process of implementing Superpave statewide and eventually phasing out the Marshall mix design process for all interstate, highway and street projects. This course will be specifically designed to educate the participants about Superpave technology as it relates to use by local governments in South Carolina for lower volume roadways, streets and parking lots.

Course Instructor:

Robert Horan was a District Engineer for the Asphalt Institute (AI) in Richmond, VA for the last five years. Prior to going to work for the Asphalt Institute, Mr. Horan spent 12 years with the Materials Division of the Wyoming Department of Transportation and 8 years with the Virginia Department of Transportation as the State Bituminous Engineer. As part of his duties with AI, Mr. Horan provided training and seminars on a wide variety of subjects in asphalt technology.

David Herndon has been the Executive Director of the South Carolina Asphalt Pavement Association since 1999. He currently serves on the board of the Southeast Asphalt User/Producer Group. He currently is a PhD candidate at Clemson University where he also earned his undergraduate and masters degrees in Civil Engineering.

Merrill Zwanka is State Materials Engineer for the SC Department of Transportation. His responsibilities include supervising the asphalt materials and structural materials aspects of the SCDOT Research and Materials Laboratory. Merrill has BS and MS degrees in Civil Engineering from the University of South Carolina and is a registered professional engineer in South Carolina.
