Course Description:

This seminar will focus on tort liability issues. The term ‘tort’ means ‘wrongful act’. Guided by this perspective, we are given advice on how to make the right decisions based on what past juries have found to be wrong. Based on criteria, you will evaluate current legal perspectives to determine which works best for you and apply these perspectives as you work through a “risk management” program dealing with highways, roads, and bridges. Learn to make choices capable of being judged by society as evidenced by a jury’s verdict as “right” or at least not “wrong”.

Course Instructor:

Larry Crowley is a member of the Civil Engineering faculty at Auburn University where he teaches classes in construction engineering and management. He holds an MBA in management and finance from Texas Christian University and a B.S. and Ph.D in civil engineering from Texas A&M University. Prior to entering academics, he worked in the design/ construction industry for more than a decade in Texas, where he is a registered professional engineer. During this time, he was employed in several different capacities–design engineer, contract administrator, project manager, and construction manager. Currently, Dr. Crowley serves as a member of the ASCE’s Construction Research Council and the Transportation Research Board’s topic panel for owner controlled insurance programs. He has recently published articles on the use of statistical models and robust statistics in construction bid data. Other research interests include pavement friction, work breakdown structure, and design build.
