Course Description:
This course will provide the basic principles of traffic control
that is contained in the MUTCD. It will also provide guidance
on the importance of compliance with the MUTCD and a general discussion
on how and why devices are included in the manual.
There will be sessions focusing on the concept of Positive Guidance,
Human Factors, and how they relate to proper traffic control,
and highlights of the MUTCD. The unfunded mandate by FHWA on MUTCD Retro-reflectivity requirements will also be discussed.
Course Instructor: Ken
Wood
Ken Wood is a Traffic Operations Engineer with the Operations
Technical Service Team in the Federal Highway Administration’s
(FHWA) Resource Center. He is a member of the FHWA’s Manual
on Uniform Traffic Control Devices team and responsible for Part
6 of the manual. He also is involved in the Federal Highway Administration’s
programs dealing with work zone safety, Quickzone training and
applications, and transportation security.
Ken previously spent 30 years with the Illinois Department of
Transportation working in the various aspects of traffic engineering,
eventually holding the position of the State Traffic Operations
Engineer
Who Should Attend:
This course is best suited for county, municipal, DOT, utility,
and contractor personnel who are responsible for or are interested
in roadway safety.

Course Fee:
The registration fee for the workshop is $100.00 per person.
All South Carolina city, county, or state employees receive a
LTAP scholarship registration fee of $25.00. The fee includes
course materials, break refreshments, and the noon luncheon.
Advance registration is encouraged so that an accurate estimate
of the number of workshop participants can be obtained. Workshops
with low advance registration will be subject to cancellation.
