Course Description:

In this workshop you will perform basic surveying techniques using the hand level, rule (tape), and level rod. You will also learn to record field measurement notes and use the notes to make simple calculations. This workshop will benefit state and local officials, road department and construction employees, foremen, supervisors, and others who are interested in learning simple applied surveying methods. Experienced individuals are welcome to attend the course; however, the workshop is geared for those with limited or no surveying experience.

Course Instructor: Huley Shumpert

Huley G. Shumpert has a BS in Engineering from the University of South Carolina and is a Professional Land Surveyor and a Professional Engineer.  He was born and raised on a farm in Pelion, South Carolina with four sisters.
He worked as a Land Surveyor for a number of years before joining the Lexington County Public Works Department where he was a staff engineer and later became County Engineer.
He joined the SCDOT in 1986 working in Richland County as an Assistant Resident Maintenance Engineer. He also worked in the District Engineering office with SCDOT before moving to the Director of Maintenance office in 1992. His final position with SCDOT was the State Maintenance Engineer and retired from that position.  He is currently working part-time for SCDOT.
He lives in Pelion with his wife, Brenda, enjoying many hobbies such as working in the yard, raising goats, photography, and traveling. 
He has two grown daughters and one grandson.

Who Should Attend
:

Experienced individuals are welcome; however, the focus is toward those with limited or no surveying experience including engineers, supervisors, managers, state and local officials, road department personnel, and others who are interested in learning simple surveying methods.

Course Fee:

The registration fee for the workshop is $100.00 per person. All South Carolina city, county, or state employees receive a LTAP scholarship registration fee of $25.00. The fee includes course materials, break refreshments, and the noon luncheon.

Advance registration is encouraged so that an accurate estimate of the number of workshop participants can be obtained. Workshops with low advance registration will be subject to cancellation.
