Clemson College Band began playing Tiger Rag in1942
after student band director Dean Ross found the sheet music
in an Atlanta music store and brought it back to campus
for football games. Dean was honored by Tiger Band in 2002
for the 60th Anniversary of Tiger Rag
Hugh H. McGarity became the first official director in
1947, taking over both the Clemson College Band and Glee
Club
Dr. McGarity was the first paid professor of music at Clemson.
He headed the band and chorus programs.
As guests of the Lions Club in 1949, Clemson College Band
traveled to New York City to represent South Carolina in
the Lions National Convention parade. The Band placed second
and won $300.
