Barriers and Catalysts
for Statewide Coordination
of Transportation Services
With sponsorship from the South Carolina Department of Transportation, Clemson University's Transportation Systems Team launched a research project to examine the barriers to statewide transit coordination. This web site provides the final report, as well as information on the project.
Public transit in the United States suffers from low ridership, high per-unit costs, and inadequate service provision. These problems are particularly acute in small to mid-sized cities and rural areas. One of the recent initiatives to address this issue is the United We Ride program at the federal level that is attempting to band together demand response agencies. The federal United We Ride involves the U.S. Departments of Transportation, Health and Human Services, and Labor. South Carolina is similarly developing its own state-level coordination guidelines to add efficiency to transit provision in the state and maximize benefits gleaned from state resources dedicated to transit services.
