Creative Inquiry
Request for Proposals

[Note: the solicitation below corresponds to the call for proposals made Spring 2008; a call for new proposals is scheduled for August 2008, however, the details of this future call are not yet resolved and may differ from what is published below]

The Dean of Undergraduate Studies is soliciting proposals for demonstration projects in support of the Undergraduate Creative Inquiry Initiative. Projects should be scheduled to begin in the Fall 2008 semester and continue for a total of at least four semesters.

Preference will be given to departments submitting proposals that integrate creative inquiry into their undergraduate degree programs.

Departmental Application Process:

Departments should submit a 3-year plan for integrating creative inquiry into their undergraduate curriculum. Proposals should include:

  • A one-page description of anticipated student learning outcomes and goals for integrating creative inquiry into the degree program
  • Projections for each semester of how many teams would be expected in the department, and how many students will be included
  • Whether graduate students will be included as team mentors
  • Mechanism for forming teams
  • Initial strategy for providing course credit
  • Plans for curriculum change to incorporate creative inquiry
  • Statement of how mentoring a team will be included in faculty workload and evaluation
  • Plans for assessment of student learning
  • Endorsement of the College Dean

Awards: $2,500 per team each semester ($5000 per fiscal year)

Individual faculty members may also apply for funding.

Applications should include:

  • A one-page project description with a descriptive title
  • A description of student recruitment procedures
  • The mechanism for providing students with course credit for participation
  • Expected student activities over four or five semesters
  • Anticipated student learning outcomes
  • Use of Blackboard ePortfolios for documentation of student learning
  • Endorsement of faculty members’ department chair

Groups may be multidisciplinary and should include 7-10 undergraduate students of all levels, although sophomores and juniors are preferred for beginning groups (graduate student-led teams should have 4-5 undergraduate members).

Deadline for receipt of proposals is Friday, February 15, 2008.

Teams associated with selected proposals will receive $2,500 for the Fall 2008 semester. These funds may be used to support the team activities, however, no funds may be used for faculty/staff salary or to pay for food. Funds may be renewed annually upon receipt of a project report.

Proposals should be submitted electronically to Jeff Appling, Associate Dean for Curriculum (JAPPLIN@clemson.edu).
