URBAN HORTICULTURE CENTER

Master Gardener Volunteers

Master Gardeners may earn volunteer hour credit by donating their time at the UHC.

Much of the success enjoyed by the UHC is the result of the hard work and dedication of the Master Gardeners who assist the UHC staff. The UHC volunteer program enhances a Master Gardener's knowledge in the art and science of gardening and provides an increased level of skill confidence.

MASTER GARDENERS TEACH...................

Master Gardeners impact the gardening community by sharing the horticulture expertise they have acquired through experience and training. They teach gardening techniques in formal and informal settings to the experienced, well  informed gardener and to the casual novice visiting a garden for the first time. The Master Gardener volunteer is the core of the Urban Horticulture Center Gardening Demonstration Program that educates more than 1200 visitors to Riverbanks Botanical Garden each year.

...................ASSIST...................

Visitors to the Riverbanks Botanical Garden are inquisitive. The UHC staff fields thousands of questions each year using the training and experience of Master Gardener Volunteers serving as Visitor Information Assistants. These volunteers enhance and multiply the ability of Extension to provide horticulture information and services to the public.

...................AND CREATE

Not all Master Gardener Volunteers assume a visible role at the UHC. Many contribute to the creation and support of UHC information and education programs, and to the development of resource capability. The UHC Gardening Calendar and the Gardening Information Kiosk are two features developed and maintained by volunteers. The UHC plant source database, cross referenced to plant material in the Riverbanks garden and local retail sources, and the UHC  Extension Horticulture Information Index are projects completed by UHC volunteers.

If you are a master gardener and would like to volunteer at the Urban Horticulture Center, please contact the UHC Volunteer Coordinator. Look here for information about becoming a master garden.
