Clematis x lanuginosa ‘Marie
Boisselot’
Developed in France (1885), this large flowered hybrid brings
with it all the
refinement of the French in the late 1800's. Elegant, satiny, pure
white, 6" flowers with golden anthers. Blooms in early and late
summer. Grows to a height of 12 feet. Zones: 4-9.
History of Clematis
There was little interest in clematis until the 1850s when many
were crossed and
improved. Plants from Japan and China became the parents of many
hybrids. Much breeding occurred in Britain, France, Belgium and
Germany until about the 1890s; in fact, more new varieties were
introduced during this period than any other in history and many
clematis grown today originated then. C. x jackmanii
(introduced in 1862) is still the most popular clematis grown today.
