4-H Robots Invade Excelsior Middle School
| Name | Jeff Fellers | | Situation | The 4-H Robotics Program is sponsored by the Extension Service in Union County. The goal of the program is to teach students to use critical thinking skills to create and problem solve. Patty Hughey, a teacher at Excelsior Middle School requested a robotics program for her sixth grade GT class. | | Response | The teacher and the agent developed a schedule for the agent to visit the first and third period classes. Each class was composed of approximately 30 students. The agent instructed the students on how to use the robots.
Students first learn about the components of the robot and what purpose they serve to make the robot function. Then comes the hard, but yet fun part. Students learn how to use a computer to write a program for the robots. Students must know the correct sequencing in order for the robot to function properly. Students are challenged to create a program for their robot that will accomplish a task. | | Impact | After my instruction, students were able to program the robots by
computer to complete a task. They used critical thinking skills to create
and problem solve. In addition, students researched and wrote an essay about robotics in our modern society.
4-H robotics is a great way to incorporate hands-on learning and
technology into the classroom. We are now conducting the program in
the after school program at Excelsior. |
