Rehabilitation of Failed Septic Systems in the Tyger River 319 TMDL Project
| Name | Raymond Sligh | | Situation | Extension has obtained 319 TMDL grant funds to reduce fecal colifrom
contamination into the Tyger River Watershed. The very first septic
system that was cost-shared and repaired occurred on Lake Lyman, one of many small drinking water lakes in Spartanburg County. This particular site was an older home that had it's drain field located on the water works right-of-way. As the lake level went down in the summer, the septic system drain field water drained into the lake and as the lake level rose, the process was reversed where the lake water rose into the drain field and back into the septic tank. | | Response | This was the first septic system to be repaired using the Tyger River Watershed grant funds. A large holding tank with a pump was installed to pump septic water up the hill into the front yard to be distributed into a new drain field. Cost was $3648.92. A cost that may be thought to be high, but one that has corrected a major drinking water problem for those who live in the northern area of Spartanburg County. | | Impact | With this correction, fecal coliform loading into the lake has been reduced, but there are plenty of others that are not known about. Since this repair, at least 28 others have been repaired with the potential of 10 more being repaired before theses grant funds are exhausted. |
