Reduce Fecal Coliform Loading into Tributary of Enoree River

Name

Raymond Sligh

Situation

Livestock watering occurs in many streams that lead into major rivers of this state. One in particular is the Enoree River located in Laurens County. To lessen the fecal coliform load and reduce cattle loafing in streams that lead to the Enoree River, a heavy use area stream crossing needs to be installed.

Response

Working with NRCS, a conservation plan was developed to reduce the time that livestock remain in the water source, therefore reducing the amount of manure being deposited. A stream crossing was developed that would allow cattle to drink clean water and still allow them a crossing site that would not create heavy sediment in the down stream side. A 6-inch Geoweb material with a 6-inch cell to hold rock was installed. The approach ramps were dug according to NRCS specifications and an eight ounce geotextile fabric was placed in the stream followed by the Geoweb that was filled with rock to stabilize the stream bottom. Once completed, the ramps were covered with crush run rock to stabilize them. Fencing can now be established along both sides of the ramps and along the stream banks.

Impact

With the stream crossing now established, cattle can obtain water and the livestock producer can safely cross with equipment to the opposite side of the stream. The true impact should be accomplished by reducing fecal coliform by limiting access of the livestock to the water source, therefore reducing TMDL loading on a daily basis.
