Submission Guidelines

Upstart welcomes submissions on emerging and ongoing issues in English Renaissance Studies. These submissions may take the traditional article form, but they need not. With the belief that form follows content, we looks favorably upon methodological innovation. We welcome anything from short pieces of provocation to richly exploratory or tightly argued long (up to 20,000 word) essays. We also welcome work in creative writing. Works that appear in Upstart are indexed in the MLA Bibliography and, if relevant, the World Shakespeare Bibliography.

Send your submission as a Word file attachment to the journal editor, Will Stockton ( Manuscripts should follow MLA guidelines with endnotes rather than footnotes. Include a 200-word abstract, a short biographical statement, and an image that we may use as the thumbnail for your piece. Authors must obtain all necessary permissions to use images that are not in the public domain. We aim to reach a decision on submissions within two months, with publication for accepted essays following not too long upon receipt of the final draft.

Upstart reviews both books and theater. While most of these reviews are solicited, we also welcome queries. If you are interested in writing a review, please contact the book editor Niamh O'Leary (
