Dear Colleagues,

Today we officially kick-off the 2008 Clemson University United Way Campaign, and we invite you to join us in this exciting and worthy endeavor. The United Way is an efficient and effective way for each of us to support a large number of services that assist individuals and communities in their time of need.  Through the United Way, every dollar makes a difference.

  • $10 will provide a copy of a birth certificate or ID for a homeless person to use to get a job
  • $25 will provide a coat and shoes for one needy child
  • $50 will provide breakfast for 54 children living in a shelter
  • $100 will provide life-sustaining medication to 22 patients
  • $156 will provide nutritious noon meals delivered to a homebound elderly person for two months
  • $500 will provide transportation for ten cancer patients' treatments for one month
  • $600 will provide emergency housing for a homeless family for one month
  • $705 will provide one year of an educational/support program for a teenage mother
  • $800 will provide therapy for one month to one child with special needs
  • $1,170 will provide food for 20 families for ten days

Clemson University employees have the option of making a one-time donation or deducting money from their paycheck each pay period.  Simply complete, sign, and return the enclosed pledge card indicating your choice of payment method and amount.  For those of you already making a payroll deduction for United Way, please consider increasing your level of support for 2008.  For those of you who have not contributed to the campaign before, we challenge you to consider doing so this year.  With all of us working together, we are confident we can reach our campus goal of $80,000.

To learn more about how your dollars can make a difference, please make plans to stop by the campaign kick-off event which will take place Friday, October 5, 3:00-4:30 p.m. in the Hendrix Student Center’s Multi-Use Room.  You may also visit the Clemson University United Way Campaign webpage at www.clemson.edu/uwcampaign for information and to view the Pickens County United Way campaign video.

The campaign deadline is November 2.  We urge you to join us in strengthening our own sense of community by investing in our local communities today.

Sincerely,

James F. Barker, FAIA
