A Nameless Story

Text Box: Chapter 1: ~Caitlyn~
Wind swept through my fiery red hair as I dangeld my feet over the edge of the boulder. My bare soles rested on top of the calm water, just barely touching it. I was lying on my back, eyes closed, reveling in the warmth of the mid August sun. I could hear the water gushing down the rocks, smell the deep rich earth, feel the coarse, rough rock beneath me and the gentle, cool water beneath my feet. It felt like heaven.
Sadly, for me, this was as close to heaven as I could ever get.
My good mood ruined, I sighed and opened my emerald green eyes, stifling a small shriek as I saw a familiar tawny-haired boy standing over me.
"Geez!" I said, slightly peeved but more excited than anything else. "You could at /least/ let me know you're there!"
“Awww, but you looked so peaceful, Caitlyn," he grinned, only half-joking.
I sighed and sat up, but I was smiling. "So... which one of you is it? Cole or Cody?"
"Cody."
"Ok. Hi Cole."
Cole grinned at me. "How'd you know it was me?"
"Because you're you, and you just told me."
Cole shook his head. "How do you do that?"
I gave him an evil grin. "It's a trade secret."
Cole, Cody, and Corey are triplets who hated that their names were so similar. Cole and Cody looked alike.
I stood up, glanced around to see if anyone was watching, and pulled him into a quick one-armed hug.
"Well, that was unexpected," Cole said and laughed.
I glared at him.
He stopped laughing.
"Geez Caitlyn, take a joke, will you?" he said, holding up his hands in the universal gesture of surrender.
I gave him a quick kick to the shin. "It's like you can't hug your friends anymore," I grumbled and walked a few paces away, staring out over the river, lost in thought.
"Uhh, Caitlyn? Look, I know it was rude to laugh, but I don’t think that quite merits /this/ much anger."
"Cole..." I trailed off, knowing I had overreacted. "I... I'm sorry, ok? Let's just say that that had very little to do with you and a lot to do with extra, pent up anger and leave it at that."
Cole gave me an annoyed look. "Augh! Now look what you did!" Huh?
"What did I do?"
You made me curious!"
The corner of my mouth quirked, a detail not missed by Cole, who gave me a goofy grin. What was it with him and grinning?
However, we were beginning to tread dangerous waters. To change the subject, I said, "So... what brings you here, Cole?"
"Mom wanted to go shopping."
"Uh, last time I checked, this wasn't a store."
Cole shrugged. "She said we could go off on our own if we didn't want to go with her."
"'We?'"
"Me, Cody, and Corey."
"Where are they?"
"Apparently, walking up to us now," Cole said, pointing as he did so. Sure enough, when I looked behind were Cody and Corey heading straight for us.
"Cole, Mom says it's time to head back now... oh hey Caitlyn!" Cody said, one sentence running into the next.
"Long time no see!" Corey raised his hand and I hi-fived it.
"You wanna go back with us?" Cody asked.
"Like, to our house?" Corey elaborated. Cody and Cole might've looked the same, but Cody and Corey acted the same, always on the same wavelength.
"Ummm... I can't. I've gotta be home in ten minutes," I lied. Why was I lying? Because I wasn't supposed to have left at all. A prolonged absence would /not/ be a good idea for me.
I closed my eyes, and saw brief flashes of how I'd left, angry and upset and needing to calm down. My brother had to have thought that anger was directed at him, when in reality I was just mad at myself for making our lives so awful, so full of fear and despair that I felt like I was constantly drowning, but never dying.
"Caitlyn!" I heard Cole's voice and the sound of someone's fingers snapping in front of my face.
"Sorry; I zoned out," I said apologetically, blinking. "But I've gotta get home, seriously."
I waved goodbye and raced away, towards my home.
	Chapter 2: ~Cole~
I watched Caitlyn run away, lingering over our little visit. As much as she tried to hide it, I could see the fear hidden behind the tough-act. When she hugged me, I felt the thin, ratty clothes she wore and her too-thin frame. She smelled unwashed, dirty, and I knew something was wrong.
I remembered when I had first met Caitlyn, just over a year ago, at a summer camp. To be honest, when I met her, I looked at her with disdain. She'd spend her time glaring into space and snapping at innocent passerby. Later I found her alone by the lake, skipping rocks. She told me she was just upset because that day would've been her dad's 50th birthday, but that he had died a year ago.
Now I was thinking something else was up. I had heard her breathing accelarate when she "zoned out" and saw her face twitch as though in pain.
Something was really wrong.
And I was going to find out what
I turned and started running in the direction Caitlyn had gone off in.
"Cole! Where are you going?" Cody and Corey shouted, chasing after me. "Mom's in the other direction!"
"I'm gonna find out what's wrong with Caitlyn!" I shouted back.
Cody and Corey ran faster and caught up with me.
"Cole--" Cody started and paused.
"We've been through this before," Corey panted.
"You're looking for something--"
"That isn't there!"
"Shut up! How can you not see that something is wrong here?" I stopped, turned, and faced them, glaring.
"Because nothing is?" Cody hazarded.
I was about to give a scathing reply when the sound of a twig snapping stopped me. I held my finger to my lips and slowly moved towards the sound. Then I heard someone cry out in pain, and it sounded an awful lot like Caitlyn.
I picked my way into a clearing, where I found Caitlyn sitting down, holding her ankle, and grimacing.
Unsure what to say, I mumbled something intelligent like, "Umm..."
Her head whipped around to face me. "What are you doing here, Cole?" her voice was scathingly cold.
Wisely choosing to ignore her, I asked a question of my own. "What happened to you?"
“I twisted my ankle, and you didn't answer my question: /What are you doing here?/"
"Uhh... I uh..." Well, what was I supposed to say? "Oh, I'm just following you"? Yeah, that'll work. Please note the sarcasm.
"What about you two? Can you manage an intelligible (did I spell that right?) answer?" I turned and saw Cody and Corey standing behind me.
I silently prayed that they wouldn't rat me out.
"Oh, we were just following Cole, who was following you," Cody said, managing to keep a straight face as I glowered at him.
Gee, thanks. Jerk.
"Why?" Caitlyn's voice was low and menacing and thoroughly creepy.
“Whoa, Caitlyn, that's seriously scaring me," I chatted nervously. Caitlyn would /kill/ me if she found out.
"Answer the question, Cole." She was using the same voice.
I racked my brain, trying to come up with a decent lie, when an unfamiliar female voice screeched, "Look out!"
I turned to the voice in time to see a ball of what looked like electricity hurtling towards me.
/Oh, geez. Why me?/
	Chapter 3: ~Layla~
“Look out!” I screeched to one of the look-alikes. Predictably, instead of running away, he turn to look at me. As he did so, a ball of energy soared towards his shocked face. I’d hoped I wouldn’t have to do this yet, but I didn’t really have much choice.
All that happened in a split second before I teleported in front of him and blocked the energy ball with my shield.
And if you aren’t confused by that sentence, go back and read it again.
Clearly, I wasn’t your average teenager. I wasn’t even your average /superpowered/ teenager. I was /special/.
And so /He/, the man who had just tried to kill that boy. I turned towards Him, looking at His painfully familiar face, blue eyes stained black.
The face of what used to be my father.
