Nestled among 418 acres of pine forest in Aiken County, the W.W. Long Leadership Center is dedicated to serving South Carolina's at-risk youth. In partnership with the SC Department of Juvenile Justice, Long houses the Youth Development Center, a year-round educational program for non-violent, determinately sentenced juveniles, and the Youth ChalleNGe Academy, a program of the SC National Guard. Affectionately known to hundreds of The site is named for Dr. William W. Long, who for 21 years was director of the Cooperative Extension Service in South Carolina. Camp Long was built in the early 1930s with help from the Works Progress Administration and several donors. The first organized camp was held in 1933 with more than 100 boys and girls in attendance.
