Thomas F. Chapman Leadership Scholars Program

The Thomas F. Chapman Leadership Scholars Program identifies College of Business freshmen who show leadership potential and nurtures those qualities throughout their Clemson career. The program is designed to enrich students’ academic preparation beyond the classroom and curriculum and support the college’s mission to develop leadership abilities in its students.

The program is based, in part, on a leadership theme developed by former Equifax CEO and board chairman, Thomas F. Chapman ’65, that uses the analogy of The Wizard of Oz characters — the scarecrow, lion and tin man — to communicate the traits of leadership. Those students whose applications are deemed the most outstanding are then further screened through an interview process with the review panel to select the 10 students who will begin the program.

Chapman Leadership Scholars have the potential to receive a total of $6,000 over three years.

Program Description

Year One:
Students will receive $1,000 and focus on developing intellect and defining leadership capabilities.

Year Two:
Scholars will receive $2,000 and learn about courage — the ethics, behavior and styles of leaders.

Year Three:
Students will receive $3,000 and focus on the heart by leading efforts to serve others in their communities.

As part of the program, participants will be engaged in a variety of activities such as service learning and Creative Inquiry projects specifically for Chapman Scholars.

Selection Process

Those interested in becoming Chapman Leadership Scholars must be freshmen registered in the College of Business and must complete an application. Applications are available in early spring in the marketing department.

A review panel will evaluate the applications to identify students who show an aptitude for leadership and a drive to be successful. Those selected will be reviewed at the end of each semester to ensure they have completed all of their Chapman Scholars assignments. Those who do will continue to receive the scholarship money each semester.

Program Size

Each year, 10 students will be selected to participate in the Chapman Leadership Scholars Program. Thus, in any given academic year, there will be a maximum of 30 Chapman Scholars (10 sophomores, 10 juniors and 10 seniors).
