Information Systems (MIS) track

The information age presents significant challenges for managers as they deal with evolving information technologies that are instrumental in enabling organizational competitiveness. The Ph.D. track in Information Systems (IS) focuses on cutting-edge IS research that focuses on the simple question of "how do we make organizations better through the deployment of information systems." This question is examined at the individual, group, organizational and inter-organizational (supply-chain) levels through a variety of theoretical perspectives and using a rich repertoire of research methodologies. Topics examine information systems such as the Internet, databases, decision and knowledge systems, etc. and how they can be built and used in order to generate business value.

With the onset of the "information age," the growth of the field has been phenomenal, and the demand for graduates is very strong. IS research at Clemson is primarily focused on the managerial, strategic, and organizational aspects of information resource management. It does not emphasize the development of specific technologies such as expert systems, software engineering, or object-oriented programming. Currently, faculty and doctoral student research is being conducted in the following areas:

Supply Chain and Operations Management (SCOM) track

The Ph.D. track in SCOM is a balanced program of management theory, analytical techniques, and research methodologies that focuses on the management of operations and supply chains. The supply chain and operations functions - managing the processes by which goods and services are sourced, created and distributed - are critical to the success of virtually all businesses and increasingly important to globalization. The track is being spearheaded by Burlington Industries Distinguished Professor, Dr. Aleda Roth, who is an internationally recognized empirical scholar in service and manufacturing operations.

The problems investigated in this track aim at developing thought leadership in SCOM. For example, some incoming SCOM students will have the unique opportunity to focus on services science - an emerging multi-disciplinary approach to studying important issues in the management and design of innovative and complex service processes. The rise of the global service economy leads to the strategic importance of services and knowledge-intensive work in both manufacturing and traditional service firms. Other students will choose to study cutting-edge research in more traditional areas of SCOM.

Foundation Courses

The three doctoral seminars in the SCOM track present the major theoretical perspectives and issues under the rubric of service science, operations, and manufacturing and supply chain strategy. The seminars are designed to guide SCOM doctoral students through various topics in the evolution of topic area and to prepare students to undertake original scientific research and be able to develop and improve the existing theory of the topic area.

The four foundation courses in the SCOM track present the critical micro- and macro-level issues related to the management of operations. The supply chain management and operations strategy courses provide macro-level perspectives. The courses offered by the Department of Industrial Engineering provide classical nonlinear optimization and algorithmic procedures, inventory models, queuing theory, and production control.

Strategic Management, Entrepreneurship and Organizational Behavior (SEO) track

The Ph.D. program in Strategic Management, Entrepreneurship, and Organizational Behavior (SEO) focuses on the areas of strategic management, entrepreneurship, and organizational behavior, with cross-disciplinary opportunities featuring existing tracks in Management Information Systems (MIS) and Supply Chain Management (SCM). The SEO group comprises research-oriented faculty who actively shape the field's scholarly conversations and hold positions at major journals. Management faculty regularly publish in top-tier journals such as the Academy of Management Journal, Academy of Management Review, Administrative Science Quarterly, Organization Science, Strategic Management Journal, Journal of Applied Psychology, Journal of Management, Journal of Business Venturing, as well as in other top-tier journals in the fields of MIS and SCM. The program is spearheaded by the Gressette Chair of Business Strategy and Planning, Professor Zeki Simsek. Other program faculty include Philip Roth, Wayne Stewart, Thomas Zagenczyk, Chad Navis, Kristin Scott, Amy Ingram, Christina Kyprianou, and Erin Powell.

The program aspires to develop skilled scholars and effective teachers for placement at leading research universities around the world. US and international individuals who are intellectually curious, innovative, disciplined, and tenacious are encouraged to apply.

M.S. in Management

The Master of Science in Management program prepares professionals to be effective leaders in supply chain, innovation, and information technology management. Graduates will have the advanced technical, entrepreneurial, and leadership skills necessary to succeed as mid- or upper-level managers in manufacturing, service, and consulting organizations. The M.S.M. program also prepares qualified students for further doctoral study in the fields of supply chain and operations management, as well as information systems management. M.S.M. students benefit immensely from the focused curriculum and close coordination of courses with the Master of Business Administration (MBA) program.

The program requires a business discipline undergraduate or graduate degree or the completion of several prerequisite courses. The M.S.M. curriculum requires 30 credit hours, which include seven core management discipline courses and three electives. A thesis (6 elective credits) or comprehensive final examination is required once all coursework has been completed. Core and elective courses cover a broad range of topics in supply chain and information technology management and in entrepreneurship and innovation management. The Graduate Programs Committee will approve the final program for each student based on his/her background, interests and availability of courses. Students can complete the program in ten months; however, there are a limited number of graduate courses offered by the Department of Management during summer sessions. Students may elect to take an independent study or directed readings course within their area of interest.

M.S.M. courses are offered in Greenville, although students may also take their elective courses offered on the main Clemson campus. All Clemson sites have high-speed Internet access and campus-wide networks containing the latest business applications. The Department of Management has a dedicated Enterprise Management Laboratory that provides access to industrial manufacturing resource planning software. The mission of the laboratory is to promote operations management by attracting talented students to the field and uniquely preparing them for career challenges in the profession. This is accomplished through active learning involving modern principles of manufacturing management, leading-edge enterprise resource planning software, teamwork, and leadership.
