Clemson University MCRP Alumni

The Department and University take pride in our alumni and seek to continue our relationship with program graduates. Clemson’s graduates have been successful in the public, private, and non-profit sectors, attaining key positions in traditional planning agencies, development groups, non-profit organizations, and private consulting firms.

Most of our alumni serve as agency directors, department heads, and staff planners at the local, regional, and state levels. Some alumni work as generalists while others are specialists in GIS, housing and community development, environmental and coastal planning, historic preservation, transportation planning, or economic development. A growing number are employed in the private sector as developers, banking professionals, market research and site location analysts, land development and urban design consultants, public-private partnership consultants, and at other consulting firms.

Our program has an excellent professional reputation and our graduates are very competitive, especially in the Southeast region. Alumni constitute a key network for student employment, both in summer internships and permanent positions after graduation. The program is in regular contact with our alumni through student placement, the state chapter of APA and various planning projects.

According to a recent alumni survey, salaries of recent graduates remain competitive with a median salary of $42,500. Of the alumni surveyed, 72% are members of the American Planning Association. In addition, 64% have obtained and maintained their certification through the American Institute of Certified Planners. Employer surveys for public service assistantships, internships, and permanent placement indicate that students are well prepared with a good understanding of basic planning concepts and technical skills that allow them to make useful contributions to the organization.

Alumni Spotlight

In April 2018, the American Institute of Certified Planners (AICP) inducted into the College of Fellows Clemson MCRP Alumni, Tripp Muldrow and Carissa Shively Slotterback. It is a recognition of the highest level of professional achievement by AICP. Out of about 16,000 AICP members roughly 500 are fellows.

Fellows of AICP are honored in recognition of the achievements of the planner as an individual, elevating the Fellow before the public and the profession as a model planner who has made significant contributions to planning and society. Fellowship is granted to planners who have been members of AICP and have achieved excellence in professional practice, teaching and mentoring, research, public and community service, and leadership.
