Departmental Awards
City Planning and Real Estate Development
Each spring, we honor the most outstanding students from the College of Architecture, Arts and Humanities at an awards ceremony. That special event had been scheduled for April 17, 2020.
While we were unable to gather together in person, what remains are the achievements of these excellent students. Their accomplishments elevate them far above the crowd. They inspire us. And in these times, we all must rise.
We believe these exceptional young people will continue to lead, not only during this moment of disruption, but in all the better days to come. We salute them all.
Gabe Jenkins, Blue Key Award
At Clemson University, each academic college selects one student a year to receive the prestigious Blue Key Academic and Leadership Award, funded by Tigerama. Jenkins, ’21, is a landscape architecture major and a first-generation college student from Orlando, Florida. An exceptional student and mentor, Jenkins is described by his instructors as determined, passionate and generous. He began volunteering at age 16 by helping feed homeless people. At Clemson, he is involved with Habitat for Humanity, the student chapter of the American Society of Landscape Architects and TigerQuest, an organization that bridges the gap between current, first-year and transfer students. In summer 2019, he interned for Mass Design Group in Kigali, Rwanda.
Brittany Lacy, Phi Kappa Phi Certificate of Merit
Each year, this national honor society recognizes one senior in the College who has made noteworthy contributions to the Clemson University community while maintaining a grade point ratio of at least 3.5. Brittany Lacy, ’20, is a construction science and management major with a minor in nonprofit leadership. She is a devoted volunteer with Habitat for Humanity, not only during the Homecoming Build but year-round as an intern, a construction coordinator and office assistant with the Pickens County affiliate. Lacy served as a construction site coordinator with Next Step Ministries during weeklong mission trips to the Pine Ridge, South Dakota reservation of the Oglala Lakota people. She participated on her department's national competition teams and was secretary of the Clemson University Construction Women organization.
Thomas Marshall III, Cameron Chase Huntley ’11 Diversity and Inclusion Award
This memorial award established by Cameron’s parents, Kevin Wade Huntley and Kimberly Wardlaw Huntley, goes to a student with a strong academic record whose service benefits underserved populations and bridges cultural differences. Like Cameron, Thomas Marshall III majored in English. Marshall, ’20, immersed himself in Clemson as a resident assistant; senator in student government; and ambassador for orientation, CAAH and Tiger Alliance. He interned with University Relations, the Pearce Center for Professional Communication and the football team. Marshall led tours, met families and mentored minority students to prepare them for the college application process. He helped register African American students to vote. In 2019, Marshall served as a Congressional Black Caucus legislative intern for U.S. Rep. Val Demings of Florida.
Courtney Grayson, Dre Martin Service Award
For this award presented in memory of Chardrevius “Dre” Martin, the CAAH Ambassadors select a fellow student with a strong academic record who is highly committed to community service and has a passion for helping others. Grayson, ’20, is a language and international health major with a minor in animal and veterinary sciences. She volunteers at a local free clinic as an interpreter for Spanish-speaking patients, with America Reads as a tutor for elementary school students and at Tiger Town Animal Hospital. At Clemson, Grayson is involved in SAGA, the Sexuality and Gender Alliance. She plans a career in public health. Nominator Dr. Arelis Moore de Peralta described her student in this way: “She represents the true Clemson spirit by being compassionate, humble and dedicated to the most vulnerable in our community.”
Matthew Leckenbusch, CAAH Faculty Member of the Year
Among dozens of faculty members nominated by CAAH students, a panel of CAAH Ambassadors selected Matthew Leckenbusch of performing arts to receive this honor. This speaks to our faculty's devotion to students, and shows how exceptional Leckenbusch is. One nomination said his door "is always open for students." When students struggle at a job fair, the director of theatre created a class to better prepare them by critiquing portfolios, restructuring resumes and recruiting theatres to conduct mock interviews. Students in the class achieved a 100% job placement rate. When Clemson went online, he texted and emailed students to make sure they were OK. And when one faced a family emergency, Leckenbusch flew to Vermont to drive the student's car back to Clemson.
Deborah Anthony, CAAH Advisor of the Year
CAAH Ambassadors select the recipient of this award based on student essays that describe an individual from the CAAH staff of faculty who demonstrates excellence in service to students. In 2020, this high honor was awarded to Deborah Anthony, an administrative assistant in the Nieri Family Department of Construction Science and Management. According to her students, she is dedicated, supportive and always ready to help. She has a well-rounded knowledge of the program, "knows everything there is to know about the classes" and "helps students succeed in school and life." One student said, “Deborah is unbeatable." Another added that she always has a smile on her face and candy on her desk: "I couldn’t have a better advisor.”
Across the College of Architecture, Arts and Humanities, departments offer exceptional students their highest awards. The criteria and descriptions for each honor appear on this awards list.
We are grateful to the special friends and benefactors of CAAH, who made possible these awards to students. We also thank Dr. Anthony Bernarducci for his time and devotion as chair of the Honors and Awards Committee, Darlene Botke from the Office of the Dean and the other committee members.
