Curriculum Vitae

Associate Professor Tim Brown joined the School of Architecture in 2015. He taught at the Illinois Institute of Technology College of Architecture for twenty-five years in both the graduate and undergraduate B.ARCH programs. As Director of International Programs he spent a decade in Europe leading IIT’s wide range of study abroad programs and developing new pedagogies combining intensive fieldwork, inventive urban studies, and in-situ studio projects. On campus in Chicago he directed the second, third, and fourth year undergraduate core design studios where he was instrumental in building a studio curriculum that drew on Mies van der Rohe’s remarkable legacy while moving fully into contemporary challenges and issues. His primary teaching focus was on the upper level Comprehensive Building Design studios and coursework exploring advanced building systems, assemblies, materials, and technologies.

Prof. Brown is the founder and principal of TBA Tim Brown Architecture, a full-service architecture and design practice built around collaborative ventures at the very small scales and extremely large scales with particular interests in the crossings of public, social, and civic space. Of particular interest is the rapidly changing nature of practice and the growing appreciation for deeper and more meaningful social responsibilities. The practice is deeply devoted to research and is propelled by the simple proposition that our professional responsibility as architects is to make meaningful place/space when meaningful includes wonder, joy, delight and assuming responsibility for the resources tapped.
